Peter Stenhouse VFX Animation Reel

Over the last few years I have been working in the music video industry as an Animator, Editor and Director. This showreel is a compilation of shots that I have directly worked on as an animator, though on most of them I have also had other roles , as director, compositor, editor, modeler, motion tracker etc. The music is "sandy" by Caribou from the album Andorra. Let me know what you think. View my site www.peterstenhouse.com

The Fratellis Flaming symbol effects

Here are some screenshots of the latest VFX that I have done for the upcoming Fratellis single. The video was directed by Dirty UK in London and shot in the spanish desert. I was charged with the task of creating an ethereal flaming F symbol. I chose to use hardware rendered particles rather than fluids to create the flame because of the very limited time and resources. Particles were emmited from an "F" object, and were effected by animated air and turbulence fields. Colour, Opacity and Mass decayed with lifespan. The aura was a fluid shape with an animated wispy noise coarsing through it (very quick to render). It was an interesting compositing challenge to create the look of flames in daylight yet not obliterate detail or colour with glare.
I would be very interested to hear of other techniques to acheive flame effects.

A small quicktime of FX shots can be downloaded from my site.

Bug - Massive Attack Showcase Intro

Bug is a bi-monthly music video showcase that takes place at the British Film Institue, in London. For June they did a special on Massive Attack. I was asked to create a short intro sequence for the showcase featuring clips from their most famous videos. In only four days I rigged, animated, rendered and composited this little beastie to crawl across a television screen. There are a number of things that I would love to change given more time, the texturing needs work, and some additional modeling would help too. I am not much of a rigger so found this aspect of the project a fun challenge. I used the helpful set driven keys technique described by Jan Sandstrom. I hope this is the first in of collaborations with Bug and Locomotion Productions whom I worked for on this.
The 10meg quicktime can be downloaded here.

Tron remake Plane Concept

In the tron revision the rules are broken and the traditional Light Cycle transforms into a acrobatic aircraft. Elements of the original Syd Mead design were manipulated to form the plane to keep the tron "look"
As this is an animation and composting test all elements were done in Maya and can be animated. The trail is an animated sweep along a motion path. I put together the render passes in Photoshop and did a few extra glints here and there.
Let me know what you think.

This was a very early piece of concept artwork showing how rules might be broken with curving lines on the game grid and a missile striking our her.
Original 3D was done in Maya and then additional bits and pieces added in Painter.
The light cycle will eventually be redesigned and transform to take to the air..
